RRB Signature Size for NTPC, Group D, ALP and Technician
Updated 9 October 2026 · Figures taken from 9 documents listed below
The Railway Recruitment Boards want the signature as a JPG/JPEG of between 30 KB and 49 KB, at least 140 pixels wide and 60 pixels high, scanned at no less than 100 DPI. On the application form it sits centred in a box of 35 mm (width) × 20 mm (height), or 3.5 × 2.0 cm. The six railway notices from mid-2025 on that are checked below use these exact words, from Technician and NTPC to Level 1 (Group D) and Assistant Loco Pilot.
That signature is the only image you prepare. The notices say candidates are not required to upload a pre-existing photograph; a webcam or the front camera of a mobile phone takes a live picture of you during the application, so a current RRB cycle has no photo size to look up.

Make the file now
The compressor below opens with 49 KB as the maximum and 30 KB as the minimum, so a cropped signature added to it comes back as a JPG inside the RRB band. Open the full compress image page.
Files are processed on this page and are not uploaded.
The result will land between the minimum and the maximum.
Which RRB exams use the 30–49 KB signature rule?
Six recruitment rounds print the same signature paragraph word for word. The two NTPC notices were issued as scanned page images, so their line is quoted from the application FAQs, which point back to para 14.5.1.
One document disagrees. Answer 51 in the FAQ issued with CEN 09/2025 gives the scanned signature as “between 30 KB to 70 KB”, while para 16.5.1 of that notice says 30 KB to 49 KB. Follow the notice: a 45 KB signature satisfies both texts, a 60 KB one only the FAQ.
| Exam | Notice | Signature paragraph | Applications opened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technician | CEN 02/2025 | 14.5.1 | June 2025 |
| Junior Engineer, DMS, CMA | CEN 05/2025 | 14.5.1 | October 2025 |
| NTPC Graduate | CEN 06/2025 | 14.5.1 (FAQ Q.60 and Q.74) | October 2025 |
| NTPC Undergraduate | CEN 07/2025 | 14.5.1 (application FAQ) | October 2025 |
| Level 1 (Group D) | CEN 09/2025 | 16.5.1 | January 2026 |
| Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) | CEN 01/2026 | 13.5.1 | May 2026 |
What is the RRB signature size in cm and pixels?
The notices measure two separate things: the image file, which needs at least 140 pixels across and 60 down with no upper limit, and the box on the form, 35 mm wide and 20 mm high, or 3.5 × 2.0 cm. Centimetres turn into pixels only once a DPI is chosen, and the table runs the box through the usual ones.
The first row is the trap. Scanned at the 100 DPI minimum, an area the size of the box comes out 138 pixels wide, two short of the floor; at 200 or 300 DPI it clears the floor easily. Read the other way, 140 × 60 pixels at 100 DPI is a strip of 3.56 × 1.52 cm, flatter (7:3) than the 7:4 box drawn on the form.
| Scan resolution | Width | Height | Meets the 140 × 60 minimum? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 DPI | 138 px | 79 px | No, 2 px too narrow |
| 150 DPI | 207 px | 118 px | Yes |
| 200 DPI | 276 px | 157 px | Yes |
| 300 DPI | 413 px | 236 px | Yes |
Why do other sites give 10–20 KB, 50 KB or 50 × 20 mm?
Three older or unrelated sets of figures are still copied around. The first comes from banks: IBPS also runs an exam called RRB, for Regional Rural Banks, and its CRP RRBs XV notification asks for a signature of 140 x 60 pixels (preferred) between 10kb and 20kb. A file that light falls below the railway floor.
The second is the previous Group D round. According to the CEN 08/2024 notice as reported by sarkaridoc.com, that form took a signature of 50 mm x 20 mm or 140 x 60 pixels at 30 to 50 KiB, plus a photograph of 50 to 100 KiB. CEN 09/2025 replaced both with the 49 KB ceiling, the 35 × 20 mm box and the live photo.
The third is ink colour. Some pages allow blue, but the railway notices say “Use a black ink pen on white paper” and list non-black ink as a rejection ground.
How do you make an RRB signature file of 30 to 49 KB?
Sign on plain white paper with a black pen, in joined-up running handwriting rather than capitals, and sign the way you will at the exam, document verification, the medical and appointment, where it is compared again. Scan at 200 DPI or more, or photograph the sheet flat in daylight, and crop to a frame a little under twice as wide as it is high.
Weight is the harder half. Plain paper with a few strokes of ink compresses to very little: a 140 × 60 strip of it stays at a few kilobytes even at top JPG quality. Keep the crop several hundred pixels across. The compressor below works towards 49 KB from either side, and when a file is too light it raises the quality first and then enlarges the picture, up to three times, until it passes 30 KB.
Before uploading, check the result card against the rule: a JPG, between 30 and 49 KB, and at least 140 by 60 pixels. The notices list these as reasons to cancel an application at any stage of recruitment:
- A background that is not white
- Ink that is not black
- BLOCK or CAPITAL letters instead of running handwriting
- A blurred, low-resolution or partly visible signature
- A blank image, or an image of something else
- A thumb impression in place of the signature
- A signature written by someone other than the applicant
Frequently asked questions
- Is 140 × 60 pixels the RRB signature size?
- It is the smallest size accepted, not a target. The notices write it as “Minimum 140 pixels (width) × 60 pixels (height)”, so 276 × 157 or 413 × 236 pixels is just as valid, and a strip shrunk to exactly 140 × 60 rarely reaches the 30 KB floor.
- Is a 40 KB signature accepted for RRB NTPC?
- Yes. The NTPC application FAQs allow any file from 30 KB to 49 KB, so 35, 40 or 45 KB all pass. A 50 KB file does not, although older guides and resizers still treat 50 as the limit.
- Is the RRB Group D signature size different from NTPC or ALP?
- Not any more. The Level 1 notice, CEN 09/2025, uses the same 30 KB to 49 KB band, 140 × 60 pixel minimum and 35 × 20 mm box as NTPC and ALP. The 30 to 50 KB and 50 × 20 mm figures belong to the earlier CEN 08/2024 round.
- Do I need a photo of a set size for the RRB application?
- No. The current forms photograph you live through a webcam or a phone’s front camera, and aiming it at a printed or on-screen photo gets the application rejected. The notices ask for non-white, preferably dark, clothing and no cap, mask or spectacles.
- What if the RRB portal says a 49 KB signature is too large?
- The compressor below counts a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes, so its 49 KB can mean up to 50,176 bytes, which a portal counting in round thousands reads as just over 50 KB. Type 47 as the maximum and compress again: the file is then at most 48,128 bytes, under 49 KB by either count.
- Can a candidate who cannot sign upload a thumb impression?
- Only in specific cases. The Level 1 notice lets some Persons with Benchmark Disabilities who cannot sign upload a scanned fingerprint instead, the left thumb first. For anyone else, a thumb impression in place of the signature is a ground for rejection.
