SSC Photo and Signature Size in 2026

Updated 8 October 2026 · Figures taken from 7 documents listed below

Under the current Staff Selection Commission notices, the only image you upload is your signature: a scanned JPEG/JPG between 10 and 20 KB, about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high. There is no SSC photo size in KB, cm or pixels any more, because the application form opens your camera and takes the photograph itself while you fill it in.

The same wording runs through the 2026 notices for CGL, CHSL, Constable (GD), Stenographer and JE, and through the MTS 2025 notice, still the latest for that exam. Pages quoting a 20–50 KB photo at 3.5 × 4.5 cm are copying an upload step from earlier cycles that none of these six documents contains.

The live photograph the SSC form takes wants the same framing as a studio portrait: a plain wall, the face centred and fully visible, no cap or glasses.

Make the file now

Add your signature scan to the compressor below: 20 KB is already filled in as the maximum and 10 KB as the minimum, so the JPG it returns sits inside the SSC band. Open the full ssc photo resizer page.

Files are processed on this page and are not uploaded.

The result will land between the minimum and the maximum.

Why is there no SSC photo size in KB any more?

Para 9.4 of the CGL 2026 notice puts it plainly: “The application module has been designed to capture a photograph of the candidate filling up the application form.” When prompted, you face a webcam or phone camera and the picture is taken there and then. You never handle a photo file, so a KB figure for it has nothing to apply to.

Without a working webcam, use the QR code on the Upload Documents page to get the Android app from the Google Play Store and take the shot by phone. Pointing the lens at a printed or saved picture of yourself gets the form rejected, unless it was filed through Aadhaar Based Authentication. The notices also expect your appearance at the examination to match the captured image.

The camera step has its own short checklist:

  • Good light and a plain background behind you
  • Camera at eye level, looking straight into it
  • Whole face inside the marked area, neither too close nor too far
  • No cap, mask, glasses or spectacles
  • No earphones or other device (Constable GD 2026 upload steps)

Is the SSC signature 6.0 × 2.0 cm or 4.0 × 2.0 cm?

Both figures appear, sometimes inside one document. The numbered paragraph on uploads (9.6 in CGL and CHSL 2026, 8.7 in Constable GD, 9.9 in Stenographer, 10.6 in JE and MTS) gives about 6.0 cm (width) x 2.0 cm (height). Further back, the Part-II walkthrough of the online form in the CGL and CHSL notices says about 4.0 cm instead.

Treat the 6.0 cm line as the rule. It sits in the body of all six notices, the Constable (GD), MTS, Stenographer and JE annexures repeat it, and the 4.0 cm width turns up only in those two form walkthroughs. Two things stay fixed in every line: a JPEG file of 10 to 20 KB. Pages that give only 4 × 2 cm have copied the walkthrough figure. Both versions call the width “about”, so aim for the 3:1 strip of the main paragraph; a slightly narrower strip still matches the short, wide shape the annexure describes.

How many pixels is the SSC signature at 200 and 300 DPI?

Centimetres only become pixels once a DPI is chosen, and five of the six notices name none. The exception is the Constable (GD) 2026 notice, whose list of upload steps reads “About 6.0 cm (width) X 2.0 cm (height) at a resolution of 300 DPI”, which works out at 709 × 236 pixels. For the other exams either density fits the wording, and 200 DPI gives a smaller strip of 472 × 157 that is easier to keep under 20 KB.

No SSC notice prints a pixel size, so 140 × 60 or 400 × 200 px figures on resizer sites are not SSC numbers. To build the strip, open the cm resizer, which starts at 6 × 2 cm and 300 DPI (type 200 if you prefer the lighter file), and then bring the result to the compressor below for the 10 to 20 KB band.

What does the Constable (GD) notice add about the signature?

Beyond the shared JPEG, 10 to 20 KB and 6.0 × 2.0 cm wording, the GD 2026 notice says “Signature should be horizontally aligned” and names the commonest fault outright: “The major reasons for rejection of signatures are ‘miniature’ signatures.” Its upload checklist writes the band as “10KB to 20KB in JPEG/JPG Format” and is the only place in any of the six documents where a DPI appears.

Horizontally aligned means the signature runs level along the strip instead of climbing at an angle. Sign along a straight pencil line, photograph the paper square on, and crop so the ink reaches close to both ends. A small scrawl ringed by centimetres of white paper is what becomes a miniature signature once shrunk to the strip.

One catch for GD applicants: the compressor below sets the weight, not the density, and does not carry a DPI value into the saved JPG. If you want the file to state 300 DPI as well, run the compressed signature through the DPI converter last. It rewrites only that header number, so the pixels stay put and the KB size barely moves.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6 cm × 2 cm the SSC photo size?
No. 6.0 × 2.0 cm is the signature strip, often mistyped as the photo size. The photograph has no size in any current SSC notice, since the form captures it with your camera.
Is a 15 KB signature accepted?
Yes. The notices set a band of 10 to 20 KB, and any JPEG/JPG inside it meets the size rule. The compressor below gets as close to 20 KB as it can without passing it, which keeps the most detail in the ink.
My signature JPG is only 7 KB. How do I increase it to 10 KB?
Add it to the compressor below, where 10 is already set as the minimum. It saves the picture again at a higher JPG quality and, if that is still not enough, enlarges the strip in pixels while keeping its shape. A scan that stays under 10 KB even then is too small or too plain, so sign larger and scan again.
Where does the 140 × 60 pixel signature size come from?
From bank recruitment. IBPS notices ask for “140 x 60 pixels (preferred)” with a 10 to 20 KB file, and some resizer sites carried that figure over to SSC. At 200 DPI such a strip measures only about 1.8 × 0.8 cm, far smaller than the 6.0 × 2.0 cm the SSC notices describe.
Do I need passport-size photos for the SSC exam day?
Only if you applied without Aadhaar Based Authentication. The Constable (GD) 2026 notice says such candidates must bring “at least two passport-size recent colour photographs” and an original photo ID, and the CHSL notice has a matching rule. These are paper prints; the passport size photo guide covers their size.
Can the SSC signature be a PNG instead of a JPG?
No. Every notice asks for JPEG or JPG, and the GD checklist spells it out as “JPEG/JPG Format”. The compressor below always saves a JPG, so a PNG exported from a scanner or notes app comes out in the right format.
