Rotate PDF

Turn sideways or upside-down pages the right way up and keep it that way in the file.

Files are processed on this page and are not uploaded.

Feed a landscape certificate through a scanner and the PDF comes out on its side; photograph a page with a phone held the wrong way and it arrives upside down. The content is fine, but whoever opens the file has to tilt their head, and a portal’s upload preview shows a sideways document. Rotating the pages and saving them that way fixes it for everyone who sees the file later.

Here you choose 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise and apply it to every page or to a list of page numbers. The turn is written into each page’s rotation attribute, the same flag that scanners and office software set, and every viewer obeys it. Nothing is redrawn, so the scan keeps its resolution and the file size barely moves.

How to use it

  1. Add the PDF and wait for the page count to appear.
  2. Pick the direction: 90° clockwise for a page lying on its left side, 90° anticlockwise for one lying on its right, 180° for a page that is upside down.
  3. Leave the page list empty to rotate everything, or type the pages that need it, such as 2, 4-5.
  4. Press Rotate and download. Open the result once to confirm every page reads the right way.

Why the rotate button in a viewer does not stick

Most viewers, Chrome’s built-in one among them, have a rotate button, but it only changes how the page is displayed on that screen at that moment. Close the file and open it again, or send it to someone, and it is back on its side, because the button never touched the file. Some desktop programs do write the change if you choose Save afterwards; the viewers people reach for on a phone generally do not. This page edits the document itself, so the rotation travels with it to the portal, the printer and the recipient’s inbox.

Rotation attribute versus re-rendering

A PDF page carries a Rotate value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 that tells the viewer how to turn the page when drawing it. Setting that value is all this tool does, which is why the result is lossless: the scanned image inside the page is untouched, the text remains selectable and searchable, and a 2MB file stays about 2MB. Re-rendering the page as a rotated picture would have cost resolution and dropped the text layer, and there is no reason to pay that price when every viewer already understands the attribute.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction is clockwise?
The way the hands of a clock move. If the top of your page currently points to the left, 90° clockwise brings it to the top. If the top points right, choose 90° anticlockwise. When unsure, rotate, look at the result and rotate again; two opposite turns cancel out exactly.
Can I rotate a single page in a long PDF?
Yes. Type that page number in the list and leave the others alone; each page keeps its own setting, so a landscape certificate scanned the wrong way can be turned without disturbing the portrait pages around it. Ranges such as 10-12 cover a run of sideways pages.
Will the rotated file still be the same size?
Very close to it. Only the rotation value in each page is changed and the file is saved again around the same content, so a 3MB scan comes back as a 3MB scan rather than growing or shrinking.
Does rotating affect printing?
Printers follow the rotation attribute the same way viewers do, so a page that reads upright on screen prints upright. Page size does not change: a rotated A4 page is still A4, now in the other orientation.
