AVIF to JPG

Convert .avif files saved from the web into ordinary JPGs.

Files never leave your device. Everything is processed in your browser.

Higher looks better and makes a larger file. 92 is visually lossless for most photos.

You save a picture from a website, try to open it, and find a file ending in .avif that your photo editor refuses to load. AVIF is a modern format that websites serve because it downloads quickly, but support in desktop software and upload forms is still patchy.

This converter turns an AVIF into a JPG, the format that everything understands.

Before and after

Before
An open laptop on a wooden table showing a landscape picture full screen, with a white mug beside it

4000 × 2667 px1.50 MBAVIF

After
The same photo saved as JPG

4000 × 2667 px2.13 MBJPG

The picture and its 4000 × 2667 px size stay the same. Only the file changes: AVIF at 1.50 MB in, JPG at 2.13 MB out.

JPG is an older format than AVIF, so the same picture needs more space.

The numbers are from a real run of the tool above. The pictures here are smaller previews of the actual files.

How to use it

  1. Drop the .avif file on the box above.
  2. It is decoded by your browser and re-saved as a JPG.
  3. Download the JPG and use it as you would any photo.

Why AVIF exists

AVIF stores still images using the AV1 video codec. At the same visual quality it is often 30 to 50 percent smaller than JPG, which saves bandwidth for sites with millions of visitors. Browsers adopted it between 2020 and 2022, but tools such as older versions of Photoshop, Windows Photo Viewer and many content management systems lag behind.

JPG or PNG as the target

Pick JPG for photographs: the files are compact and universally accepted. If your AVIF has a transparent background, such as a product cut-out or a logo, JPG will fill the transparency with white. To keep it see-through, use the AVIF to PNG converter instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a quality loss when converting AVIF to JPG?
A small one in theory, because both formats are lossy. At the high quality setting used here the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses more efficiently. Holding the same picture in JPG takes more bytes. Lower the quality slider if size matters more than fidelity.
The file will not open here either. What now?
Very old browsers cannot decode AVIF. Update your browser, or try a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, all of which read AVIF.
