Stamp Size Photo

Cuts a portrait down to 2 cm × 2.5 cm, the small stamp-size box on Indian forms, at 300 DPI.

Pixels per inch when printed. 300 is standard for photos and documents.

If the shape is different

A stamp size photo is the smallest portrait an Indian form asks for: 2 cm wide and 2.5 cm tall, which is 20 × 25 mm and 236 × 295 pixels when printed at 300 DPI. It fills the little box on application and office forms where a passport photo would not fit, and the Election Commission of India uses the same measurement for the candidate photographs printed on ballot papers.

The boxes already read 2 × 2.5 cm at 300 DPI with “Crop to fill” selected, so a dropped photo is processed at once. The picture is scaled to 236 × 295 pixels, anything beyond the 4:5 frame is trimmed in equal strips from opposite edges, and 300 DPI is written inside the JPG or PNG so printing software knows the true size. A JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG; an iPhone HEIC comes back as a JPG.

Before and after

After

The dashed frame on the left marks the part that fits the new shape. It was scaled to exactly 236 × 295 px, and the left and right edges outside the frame were trimmed.

The file went from 1.06 MB to 48.8 KB.

The image on the right is the actual file the tool above produced.

How to use it

  1. Choose a head-and-shoulders photo with the face in the middle and plain wall around it; the tool trims edges but never shifts the face.
  2. Drop the file in. The preset values mean nothing needs typing, and the resize starts on its own.
  3. Zoom into the preview. The whole head, hair to chin, should sit inside the frame with a little room above it.
  4. Read the KB and pixel figures on the result card, then download. If the form also caps the weight, pass the file through the compressor for that limit.

Stamp size against passport size

Passport size in India is 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm; the Ministry of External Affairs guidelines for Passport Seva applications state 4.5 cm length x 3.5 cm width. A stamp size photo at 2 × 2.5 cm is a little more than half as wide and half as tall. The shapes differ slightly: 3.5:4.5 reduces to 7:9, stamp size to 4:5. A passport photo brought here therefore loses about 3 per cent of its height, shared between top and bottom; a 3:4 phone portrait gives up roughly 6 per cent the same way.

Enlarging a finished stamp photo to passport size is best avoided: 236 × 295 pixels stretched to 413 × 531 has nearly double the area to invent and prints soft, so cut each size from the original phone photo. The DPI decides the pixel count: when a portal gives cm with 200 DPI, change the DPI box and the same 2 × 2.5 cm becomes 157 × 197 pixels, and at 150 DPI it is 118 × 148. The chosen DPI is saved in the file.

Where the 2 cm × 2.5 cm figure is written down

Most forms print the words “stamp size” beside a box and give no measurement. The clearest official statement is the Election Commission of India’s direction on candidate photographs for ballot papers, as reproduced by the state chief electoral officers: stamp size 2 cm x 2.5 cm, white or off-white background, full face view directly facing the camera, neutral facial expression with eyes open, colour or black and white, taken within the three months before the election is notified.

For an ordinary admission or office form, measure the printed box with a ruler before trusting the label; outside India the term means other sizes. If the box is not 2 × 2.5 cm, type its own width and height into the cm fields.

Background, file weight and printing a sheet

The tool crops and scales; it does not swap the background, whiten a wall or print a name and date. Stand a step away from the plainest light wall available, face a window for even daylight and hold the phone at eye level. That gives most of the white or off-white forms ask for, without the head’s shadow on the wall.

With about 70,000 pixels to store, a JPG from this page normally weighs 15 KB to 45 KB. A form demanding under 20 KB needs one pass through the compressor; a form with a minimum is met by the increase tool. For paper, studios lay stamp photos out in a grid and cut them apart, about 20 to a 4 × 6 inch print and about 80 to an A4 sheet with gaps for the blade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the stamp size photo size in cm, mm, inches and pixels?
2 cm × 2.5 cm, which is 20 × 25 mm or roughly 0.79 × 0.98 inches. In pixels it depends on the DPI: 236 × 295 at 300, 157 × 197 at 200 and 118 × 148 at 150.
Is a stamp size photo the same as a passport size photo?
No. Passport size in India is 3.5 × 4.5 cm, stamp size 2 × 2.5 cm, a little over half the width and height. The shapes are close, 7:9 against 4:5, so converting trims only a thin strip.
Can I make a stamp size photo from a passport size photo?
Yes, from the digital file: drop it in and about 3 per cent of its height is trimmed to reach 4:5. A 300 DPI scan of the print also works; a phone photo of a print comes out soft.
Does the tool put a white background behind my face?
No. It crops and scales the picture and leaves the colours alone. Shoot in front of a plain light wall; if a form insists on pure white, edit the background first, then bring the picture here.
How do I print stamp size photos at home?
Choose actual size or 100 per cent in the print dialogue, never fit-to-page, or the 2 cm becomes 20; the DPI stored in the file tells the printer the true size.
Why has the result lost the top of the head?
The source was framed too close for a 4:5 cut, so the even trim at top and bottom took the hair. Use a photo taken from further back, or crop it to 4:5 yourself first on the crop page listed below.
