Three units wide by four units tall is the traditional portrait proportion. It is the shape of a phone photo held upright, of many printed portraits, and of the previews on an Instagram profile grid.
This page crops to 3:4 as soon as you add a picture. The largest possible 3:4 area is taken from the middle, and you can move the frame if the subject sits off-centre.
Before and after

2016 × 2688 px756 KBJPG
The dashed frame on the left marks the part that was kept: 2016 × 2688 px out of the original 4032 × 2688 px.
The kept part is not scaled up or down.
The numbers are from a real run of the tool above. The pictures here are smaller previews of the actual files.
How to use it
- Add your photo above.
- A centred 3:4 crop is produced immediately.
- If needed, drag the frame to reposition it and press Crop again.
- Download the result.
3:4 is not 4:3
The first number is the width. 3:4 is taller than it is wide; 4:3 is the landscape version of the same proportion, familiar from older monitors and tablets. If you start with a landscape photo, a 3:4 crop keeps a vertical slice from the centre and discards a good deal on both sides.
Output size
Cropping keeps the original resolution, so the pixel size of the result depends on your photo. A 4000 × 3000 landscape shot yields 2250 × 3000; a 3000 × 4000 portrait shot is already 3:4 and is returned whole. To end up at a set size such as 1080 × 1440, use the dedicated resize page linked below.
Frequently asked questions
- What pixel sizes are 3:4?
- Any pair where width × 4 equals height × 3. Common ones are 750 × 1000, 1080 × 1440, 1536 × 2048 and 3000 × 4000.
- Can I choose which part of the photo is kept?
- Yes. After the automatic centred crop, drag the frame over the preview to a new position and apply the crop again.
- Is a 3:4 crop suitable for passport photos?
- Some countries use sizes close to 3:4, such as 35 × 45 mm, but that ratio is 7:9, slightly different. Check your official specification and use the resize tool with centimetres if exact dimensions are required.
