Resize Image for WhatsApp DP

Turns a tall or wide photo into a 640 × 640 square that you framed, ready to set as your DP.

Files never leave your device. Everything is processed in your browser.

If the shape is different

A display picture is a square slot, and most photos are not square. A selfie from a phone is tall, a group shot from a holiday is wide, and whatever falls outside the square has to go somewhere. Left to chance, that tends to be the top of a head, the person standing at the end of the row, or the writing on a poster. Making the square yourself before you set the DP means you choose the cut, not the app.

This page opens at 640 × 640 pixels with “Crop to fill” selected. WhatsApp does not publish an official pixel size for profile photos, so treat 640 as a safe, sharp choice rather than a rule: it holds plenty of detail for a small round avatar and still looks clean when the photo is viewed larger. If you see 500 or 800 quoted elsewhere, those are guesses too, and any of them will work as long as the picture is square.

Before and after

Before

After
The same photo resized to 640 × 640 pixels

640 × 640 px110 KBJPG

The dashed frame on the left marks the part that fits the new shape. It was scaled to exactly 640 × 640 px, and the left and right edges outside the frame were trimmed.

The file went from 639 KB to 110 KB.

The image on the right is the actual file the tool above produced.

How to use it

  1. Pick the photo you want as your DP. If the face is far from the middle, or you want to keep only two people out of six, frame it first with the crop tool at 1:1 and bring that square back here.
  2. Leave the boxes at 640 and 640 and keep “Crop to fill” on. Press Resize, and the long side of the photo is trimmed equally from both ends until it is square.
  3. Look at the preview with a circle in mind: if the face sits close to the top edge or a corner, it will be the first thing lost on a round thumbnail. Re-crop if needed.
  4. Save the file to your phone’s gallery, then choose it from there when you change your profile photo.

Why “without cropping” is not quite possible

A rectangle only becomes a square in one of two ways: something is cut off, or empty bars are added to the short sides. This tool does the first. It does not add white or blurred borders, so a full-length portrait will lose some sky and floor, and a wide group shot will lose its outer edges. If you switch the fit to “Stretch”, nothing is cut, but faces get squeezed thin or wide, which looks worse on a profile picture than any trim.

The way to keep what matters is to decide the square yourself. Open the crop tool, choose 1:1, drag the frame over the people you want, and only then resize here. A tight head-and-shoulders square usually reads better at thumbnail size than a whole scene squashed into the same space.

Size, sharpness and file type

WhatsApp has not stated a pixel size or a file-size limit for profile photos, so this page makes no claim to meet one. 640 × 640 is simply large enough to stay crisp on a phone screen and small enough to set quickly on a slow connection. You can type a larger square, such as 1080 × 1080, if your original is big; keep both numbers equal.

Quality depends on what you start with. A photo smaller than 640 pixels on its short side is enlarged to fill the square and will look soft, so use the original from your camera rather than a copy saved from a chat. A JPG comes back as JPG and a PNG as PNG; an iPhone HEIC is saved as JPG, and location details from the camera are not kept in the new file.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official WhatsApp DP size?
WhatsApp does not publish one. Sites that quote 500 × 500 or 800 × 800 are giving their own recommendation. What matters is a square shape; 640 × 640 is the default here because it is sharp and light.
Can I set my DP without cutting anything off?
Only if the photo is already square. Otherwise part of it has to go, or bars have to be added, and this tool does not add bars. Use the crop tool at 1:1 to choose exactly which part stays, then resize here.
My head is cut off at the top. How do I fix it?
The trim is taken evenly from both ends, so a face near the top of a tall photo gets clipped. Crop the photo to a square with your face in the middle first, leaving some space above your hair, and resize that.
Should I make the picture round before uploading?
Not for a DP. A square photo with the face centred is all you need. If you want a round cut-out with a transparent background for a sticker or a design, the circle crop tool makes one as PNG.
Will resizing make my DP blurry?
Shrinking a phone photo to 640 × 640 keeps it sharp. Blur comes from starting with a tiny image, such as a forwarded copy or a screenshot, which has to be enlarged. Start from the original photo.
